Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
